Akshay has an engineering background and has been selected from Nagpur. At the age of 20 he was selected as Laughter Champion of Chhattisgarh State.
Why Akshay thinks he should become Star Anchor:
Seeing is believing & hearing is absorbing, at the age of 6 seeing commentators live on soccer & cricket matches, made me mimic them.I started doing live commentaries of cricket since I was 14 in city level matches.When Kargil War broke out, I realized the part a News Anchor play in shaping the mindset of the people of country especially youngsters.
This was the time when I decided to serve my country the best way I can. Because of shoulder problem I couldn’t join Defense Service, so thought for other best way and decided to make my hobby into my profession. I started looking for the opportunity to enter the media industry. While doing my Chemical Engineering FM Radio channel MyfM 94.3 launched in Bilaspur, I was the first to get selected in my first ever audition. Since than I was trying to be with News Channel, but couldn’t get through as I didn’t have any degree or diploma related to any means of MEDIA.As I believe destiny is always about how you wanna make , as soon as I saw the mail about STAR ANCHOR HUNT, I rushed towards Nagpur auditions. STAR ANCHOR HUNT has given me the opportunity to become what I want. With my confidence, presence of mind, understanding of contemporary issues and skill to present that in a effective manner along with my commitment towards job, complements the best of quality of mine to become STAR ANCHOR.

New Delhi, June 21 (IANS) Bilaspur’s Akshay Shukla and Delhi’s Meenakshi beat four other finalists to win the Star Anchor Hunt for news anchors, winning a three-year contract with Star News and a Ford Figo car each.
Akshay and Meenakshi, both 24, were declared the winners here Sunday at a gala event where Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad was the chief guest.
This is the first reality show to find news anchors.
‘It’s like a dream come true. When I went for the audition, I had it in my mind that I have to win this contest,’ Akshay told IANS.
‘Basically, I am an engineer, but I always wanted to be an anchor. When this opportunity came to me, I didn’t think twice before grabbing it. Although I didn’t get much support from people, I was adamant that I have to go for this.
‘Now that I have won, I feel more responsible towards my goal. I have to do much better in future,’ he added.
In the final round, six finalists, including Vishal Kalra from Ahemdabad, Gurdeep Singh Mann from Chandigarh, Seher Ahmed from Jaipur and Pallavi Tyagi from Delhi, were asked to interview Lalu Prasad.
‘I feel I am still in a trance. The feeling of being the winner is yet to sink in,’ said Meenakshi, who used to work with a multinational firm.
Author Chetan Bhagat, actress Tisca Chopra and Star News anchor Deepak Chowrasia were on the judges panel.
Talking about his experience, Chetan told IANS: ‘Sitting on the judge’s seat was a bit strange and unusual as I am not used to it. But the experience has been fruitful. I always wanted to connect with the youth. This platform helped me to do so. I being an English language author, the show helped me to connect with the Hindi audiences.’
